Interface Management Terms

Definition of Interface Matrix

An interface Matrix should identify the main physical or functional areas of an interface and define which team should be responsible for each aspect of each area.

This typically defines responsibility for different parts of the scope of work, and is often clear, but not always. For example:
- design or construction responsibility may vary depending on the phase of the project;
- one team might be responsible for functional issues beyond the battery limit, into the other teams “territory” (like pigging of a pipeline – pig receiver beyond the battery limit).

Note: an interface matrix between 2 contractors that is included in one or both contracts should be identical - and resolved and agreed before award of both contracts

Interface Matrix is sometimes confused with interface register or contact register.
